Every smoothie recipe below uses only ingredients on Dr. Sebi's nutritional guide. That sounds like a low bar, and it isn't — most alkaline smoothie recipes online lean on bananas, almond milk, pineapple or spinach, and none of those four are on the list.
Quantities are for one large glass or two small ones. All of them take about two minutes.
What goes in an approved smoothie
Five slots. Fill them and it works.
- Liquid — spring water, or one of the approved plant milks. Hemp milk is the everyday one, and you can skip making it by blending the seeds straight in.
- Base — burro or baby banana, avocado, mango or soft jelly coconut. This is what makes it a smoothie rather than juice with bits in.
- Fruit — berries, mango, papaya, melon, soursop, peach, apple, pear.
- Green — kale, watercress, dandelion greens, amaranth greens, wild arugula. Start with a handful; you won't taste it.
- Fat or thickener — hemp seeds, walnuts, Brazil nuts, tahini, avocado, or a spoon of sea moss gel.
Sweeten with one or two dates, date sugar or a little pure agave. Lift with a squeeze of key lime — this is the one ingredient people leave out and it is the one that makes a smoothie taste finished rather than flat.
The recipes
1. The everyday green
The one to learn first. It is sweet enough that nobody will guess there's kale in it.
- 1 burro banana
- 1 large handful kale, stems stripped
- 1/2 avocado
- 1 cup frozen mango
- 1 1/2 cups spring water
- 1 date
- Juice of half a key lime
Blend 60 seconds. If it's too thick, more water; too thin, more frozen mango.
2. Berry and hemp
Highest protein of the set, and the one that holds you longest.
- 1 1/2 cups mixed frozen berries
- 3 tablespoons hemp seeds
- 1 burro banana
- 1 1/2 cups spring water
- 2 dates
- Pinch of sea salt
Blend 90 seconds so the hemp seeds break down properly. The pinch of salt is not optional — it sharpens the berries noticeably.
3. Sea moss and mango
Thick, tropical, and the easiest way to get sea moss into a day if you don't like it by the spoon.
- 2 tablespoons sea moss gel
- 1 1/2 cups frozen mango
- 1 cup spring water
- 1/2 cup soft jelly coconut water, or more spring water
- 1 date
- Juice of half a key lime
Sea moss gel is neutral in flavour and behaves like a thickener. Start with one tablespoon if it's new to you — it is iodine-rich and worth building up slowly. More on sea moss, including the iodine point, here.
4. Papaya and key lime
Light, and the gentlest on an empty stomach.
- 2 cups ripe papaya
- 1 1/2 cups spring water
- Juice of a whole key lime
- 1 date
- Small piece of fresh ginger, peeled
Papaya and key lime is one of those combinations that tastes like it was designed. Don't skip the ginger.
5. The watercress one
For when you want the green to actually taste green. Peppery and bracing.
- 1 large handful watercress
- 1 apple, cored
- 1/2 cucumber
- 1 burro banana
- 1 1/2 cups spring water
- Juice of half a key lime
6. Walnut and date
The closest thing on the list to a dessert, and a good one to break a fast with after the Soften step.
- 1/3 cup walnuts, soaked 4 hours and drained
- 3 dates
- 1 burro banana
- 1 1/2 cups spring water
- Pinch of sea salt
- 2 tablespoons hemp seeds
Soaking the walnuts takes the bitterness out. Worth doing.
7. Soursop
If you can find the fruit, this is the one people remember.
- 1 cup soursop pulp, seeds removed
- 1 1/2 cups spring water or hemp milk
- 1 date
- Squeeze of key lime
The seeds are removed, always. The fruit is on the approved list; the leaf is a separate thing with its own considerations.
8. Melon cooler
Barely a recipe. In summer it's the best thing on this page.
- 3 cups seeded watermelon or cantaloupe, cubed and frozen
- 1/2 cup spring water
- Juice of half a key lime
- A few mint-free extras if you like — a pinch of sea salt is the one that works
Seeded watermelon specifically — the guide's criterion is the seeds.
Getting them right
- Freeze the fruit, not ice. Ice waters a smoothie down as it melts. Frozen mango, berries and melon give you cold and thickness at once. Peel and freeze burro bananas when they get too ripe to eat.
- Salt. A pinch of pure sea salt in a sweet smoothie does what it does in cooking — makes the fruit taste more like itself. The single most underrated tip here.
- Blend longer than feels necessary. Nuts, seeds and kale stems need 60 to 90 seconds. Most disappointing smoothies are under-blended, not badly combined.
- Strip kale stems. They are fibrous enough to survive a domestic blender and you will find them.
- Order in the jug: liquid first, then soft, then frozen, then greens on top. It blends more evenly and you stop having to scrape the sides.
- Batch the dry parts. Bag up portions of frozen fruit, greens and seeds in advance. Morning becomes: tip in a bag, add water, blend.
- Drink it soon. They separate within twenty minutes. That's normal, but it's better fresh.
What to leave out
These turn up constantly in recipes labelled Dr. Sebi and none of them are on the guide:
- Cavendish bananas — the standard supermarket kind. Burro and baby are the two listed.
- Almond milk and oat milk — almonds and oats aren't on the list.
- Spinach — use kale, watercress or dandelion greens instead.
- Pineapple, regular oranges, lemons — key lime and Seville orange are the citrus on the guide.
- Chia seeds and flaxseed — neither is named. Hemp seeds do the thickening job.
- Peanut butter, cashews, almonds — walnuts, Brazil nuts, sesame and tahini are the approved ones.
- Honey, maple syrup, agave blends — dates, date sugar and 100% pure agave are what's listed.
- Protein powders — check the label; almost all carry something off-list. Hemp seeds are the approved route to protein.
Common questions
Can I use frozen fruit?
Yes, and you should. Cheaper, always in season, and it does the job ice does without diluting anything.
How do I make it filling enough for breakfast?
Fat and protein. Hemp seeds, avocado, walnuts or tahini. A fruit-and-water smoothie is a drink, not a meal, and you'll be hungry by ten.
Does a smoothie break a fast?
Yes — it's a meal. If you're breaking a fast, the order matters, and a full smoothie belongs at the Build step rather than first.
Is a smoothie as good as eating the fruit?
The fibre stays in, which is the main difference between a smoothie and a juice. It goes down faster than chewing would, so it's worth eating whole fruit some of the time too.
What blender do I need?
Any of these work in a basic jug blender if you blend long enough and soak the nuts. A high-powered one is smoother, not essential.
Can I make them the night before?
They separate and darken. Better to bag the ingredients the night before and blend in the morning.
