Breakfast is where most people following this list get stuck, and the reason is specific: the three default Western breakfasts are all off the guide at once. No oats, no bread as you know it, no eggs or dairy. What's left needs a bit of thought the first week and then becomes routine.
Here are the options that actually work, with times and ratios, sorted by how long they take.
Under five minutes
Fruit and hemp seeds
The default, and there's no shame in it. A bowl of berries, melon, papaya or sliced burro banana with two tablespoons of hemp seeds and a squeeze of key lime. The seeds are what stop you being hungry by ten — fruit alone won't hold you.
A smoothie
Fastest real breakfast on the list. Bag the ingredients the night before and it's a ninety-second job in the morning. Eight recipes here — the berry and hemp one is the most filling.
Avocado on spelt toast
Spelt and kamut bread exist and are widely sold in health food shops. Toast, mash half an avocado onto it, sea salt, cayenne, a squeeze of key lime. Read the label — a lot of "spelt bread" is a blend with wheat.
Tahini and date spread
Two tablespoons raw tahini, one date mashed in, a pinch of sea salt. On spelt toast, or on apple slices. Tastes like something you'd be told off for eating for breakfast.
Ten to fifteen minutes
Quinoa flake porridge
The closest thing on the list to a bowl of oats, and the one most people land on.
1/2 cup quinoa flakes to 1 1/2 cups liquid — spring water or hemp milk. Bring to a simmer, stir for 3 to 5 minutes until it thickens. Pinch of sea salt. Top with berries, date sugar, walnuts.
Quinoa flakes cook nearly as fast as instant oats. If you're replacing a daily oat habit, start here.
Amaranth porridge
1/2 cup amaranth to 1 1/2 cups liquid. Simmer 20 minutes, covered, stirring occasionally. Naturally creamy and slightly peppery, with a texture closer to tapioca than to oats — small beads rather than a smooth mass. Higher in protein than most grains here.
Teff porridge
1/2 cup teff to 2 cups liquid. Simmer 15 to 20 minutes. Dark, malty, almost chocolatey, and the most iron-dense grain on the approved list — which matters when you're eating this way. Good with dates and walnuts.
Fonio
1/2 cup fonio to 1 1/2 cups liquid. Five minutes, then rest off the heat for five more. The fastest of the whole-grain options, light and mild, and a West African staple worth knowing. Works sweet or savoury.
Savoury, if sweet breakfast isn't your thing
Mushrooms and onions over quinoa
Leftover quinoa from the night before, mushrooms and onions in grapeseed oil, sea salt, oregano, cayenne. Ten minutes and it eats like a proper meal. Any mushroom except shiitake.
Kale and avocado bowl
Kale massaged with olive oil, sea salt and key lime until it softens — that's a real technique, not a flourish, and it takes about a minute of actual rubbing. Add avocado, cherry tomatoes, hemp seeds.
Chickpea scramble
Garbanzo beans are on the approved list. Mash a cup of cooked chickpeas roughly, fry in grapeseed oil with onion, sea salt, cayenne and a little onion powder until it catches at the edges. It isn't eggs, but it does the same job on a plate.
Chickpea flour pancake
1/2 cup chickpea flour to 2/3 cup spring water, pinch of sea salt, rest 10 minutes. Pour thin into a hot oiled pan, 3 minutes a side. Savoury and substantial. Onion, cayenne and oregano in the batter; avocado on top.
Batch it, or you won't keep this up
This is the practical difference between people who sustain this and people who give up in week two.
- Cook grains on Sunday. A big pot of quinoa or teff keeps five days in the fridge. Porridge then becomes reheating with a splash of liquid, not cooking.
- Bag smoothie portions. Frozen fruit, greens and seeds, one bag per morning.
- Make hemp milk in three-day batches. Four tablespoons of seeds and three cups of water, blended. No soaking, no straining.
- Keep a jar of date paste. Soak dates in warm water an hour, blend smooth. It sweetens everything and saves chopping.
- Freeze ripe burro bananas peeled, in chunks. They're the base of half the smoothies.
The swaps, plainly
- Oats → quinoa flakes, amaranth, teff or fonio. Why oats are out.
- Wheat toast → spelt, kamut or rye bread — check the label for blends.
- Eggs → chickpea scramble or a chickpea flour pancake.
- Dairy and almond milk → hemp, walnut, Brazil nut or sesame milk.
- Cavendish bananas → burro or baby bananas.
- Coffee → simmered ginger or roasted burdock. Taper rather than stopping dead.
- Honey or maple syrup → dates, date sugar or pure agave.
- Peanut butter → raw tahini or walnut butter.
If you're fasting through breakfast
Plenty of people on this framework skip breakfast entirely — and skipping one meal a day is, more or less exactly, what Dr. Sebi described as the way to build up. In that case what's on this page becomes your first meal at noon rather than at seven, and the order you eat it in matters.
Common questions
What can I have instead of oatmeal?
Quinoa flakes are the closest in speed and texture. Teff if you want something richer, amaranth if you like a beadier porridge.
Is spelt bread really allowed?
Spelt is on the approved grain list. Whether a given loaf qualifies depends on the label — many are spelt-and-wheat blends, and the wheat isn't on the list.
Are chickpeas approved?
Garbanzo beans are named on the guide, which is the same thing. Chickpea flour follows.
How do I get protein at breakfast?
Hemp seeds, walnuts, tahini, chickpeas, quinoa and amaranth. Two tablespoons of hemp seeds on fruit is the easiest fix.
Can I have fruit on an empty stomach?
Most people are fine with it. If it leaves you hungry quickly, that's the missing fat and protein rather than the fruit — add seeds or avocado.
What's the cheapest breakfast on this list?
Quinoa flake porridge with frozen berries and hemp seeds. All three keep, none are seasonal, and hemp seeds work out cheap per serving despite the bag price.
