Sarsaparilla: The Most Documented Root on the List

Sarsaparilla is the most historically documented plant in the whole Dr. Sebi herb cabinet — a root with four hundred years of written medical record behind it, which is more than almost anything else on any version of the list can claim.

Here is what it is, where it sits in the framework, what's actually in it, and what the record does and doesn't show.

What it is

Sarsaparilla is the root of a Smilax vine — a woody, trailing climber that can run to fifty metres. Several species are used and they aren't interchangeable in name: S. regelii is Jamaican sarsaparilla, S. aristolochiifolia is Mexican, S. officinalis Honduran, and S. glabra the Chinese one.

The root is fragrant, with a spicy sweetness, which is why it ended up as a flavouring as well as a medicine.

Where it sits on Dr. Sebi's lists

Not on the nutritional guide. Sarsaparilla belongs to the second of the three herb lists — the plants his practice and compounds actually used, as distinct from the seven approved herbal teas. We set out all three lists here, because conflating them is why most herb content on this subject is unreliable.

Within that second list, sarsaparilla is one of the most frequently named, usually alongside burdock and the two seaweeds.

The iron question

Sarsaparilla is widely described in the alkaline community as exceptionally iron-rich, and that description comes from Dr. Sebi's own teaching, where it is one of the reasons the root is valued.

What published compositional work on Smilax reports is a root containing phenolic compounds, flavonoids, steroidal saponins and a range of minerals. If iron content is the reason you're reaching for it, that's the literature to weigh alongside the framework's account.

The history, which is unusually well recorded

This is the part worth knowing, and it's genuinely remarkable.

Spanish physician Nicolás Monardes documented sarsaparilla as a treatment for syphilis in 1574. It was shipped to Europe from the Americas in quantity for exactly that purpose, and remained in use for centuries. In 1812, Portuguese soldiers treated with sarsaparilla were recorded as recovering faster than those given mercury, which was the standard treatment of the day — a low bar, mercury being actively poisonous, but a documented comparison nonetheless.

From there it settled into the role it still occupies in herbal practice: a depurative, a "blood purifier", a skin and joint herb. S. china remains listed in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia.

That four-hundred-year record is the honest reason sarsaparilla has a reputation. Not a modern trial — a long paper trail.

What's actually in it

The characteristic compounds are steroidal saponins — sarsaponin, smilasaponin and sarsaparilloside among them — along with phenolics, flavonoids and minerals.

Saponins are soap-like molecules. They foam in water, they have real biological activity, and they are also the reason for most of sarsaparilla's documented side effects, which are further down this page.

What the modern evidence says

Straightforwardly: clinical trials are limited, and clinical evidence for the traditional uses is lacking.

There is animal and laboratory work showing anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity, which is a reasonable place for a line of research to begin. What doesn't exist is human trial evidence establishing that drinking sarsaparilla decoction does any particular thing.

That gap between a rich historical record and a thin modern one is common across traditional herbs, and it's worth holding both facts at once rather than picking whichever suits.

It isn't what's in root beer

A small correction that catches people out. Sarsaparilla is used as a natural flavouring in foods and soft drinks — but the classic American root beer flavour is sassafras, a different plant entirely. "Sarsaparilla" as a drink name is a separate, older tradition.

How to prepare it

Sarsaparilla is a root, which means it is decocted, not steeped. Simmer the cut root in water for twenty to forty minutes, covered, then strain.

Pouring hot water over root pieces and leaving them five minutes — the way you'd treat a tea bag — extracts very little. This is the single commonest preparation mistake in the category, and it applies equally to burdock and dandelion root.

Sweeten with date syrup or agave if you want to; both are approved. It's bitter, and most people meet it in a blend for that reason.

Safety

Better documented than for most herbs on this list, and worth reading before you make it a daily habit.

Gastrointestinal irritation and increased urination are both reported, and both trace to the saponin content. Large amounts are more likely to produce them than small ones.

Possible effects on drug metabolism. Sarsaparilla has been noted to induce liver enzymes, which is the mechanism by which a herb can change how fast your body clears a medicine. If you take prescription medication of any kind, that's a question for your doctor or pharmacist rather than a risk to take blind.

Root dust. One documented case of occupational asthma in someone exposed to sarsaparilla root dust — relevant if you're grinding it yourself, not if you're drinking it.

And the general rule for any dug root: it is only as safe as the person who identified it. Traceable sourcing beats the word "wildcrafted" on a label every time.

One thing worth being straight about

Sarsaparilla doesn't change the pH of your blood. Your lungs and kidneys hold it between 7.35 and 7.45 whatever you drink — a reading outside that range is a medical emergency, not a dietary result.

It isn't a treatment for any disease. What it is: a root with a long and genuinely interesting medical history, real saponin chemistry, and a thin modern evidence base — taken as part of a way of eating built on plants.

Is sarsaparilla on Dr. Sebi's approved list?

Not on the nutritional guide's tea list, which names seven: burdock, chamomile, elderberry, fennel, ginger, raspberry and tila. Sarsaparilla belongs to the wider set of herbs his compounds used.

Which sarsaparilla should I buy?

S. regelii is the Jamaican root and the one most often sold for this purpose. What matters more than species is whether the seller can tell you where it came from.

How do I make sarsaparilla tea?

Simmer, don't steep — twenty to forty minutes, covered. Strain and sweeten with date syrup or agave if you need to.

Can I drink it every day?

Many people do. The saponins are the reason to keep the amount modest rather than generous, and the enzyme-induction note above is the reason to ask a doctor if you take any medication.

Is it the same as sassafras or root beer?

No. Root beer's characteristic flavour is sassafras; sarsaparilla is a different plant with its own, older drink tradition.
