Is Garlic Alkaline? Yes — and Still Not Approved

Short answer: garlic is mildly alkaline-forming, and it is not on Dr. Sebi's approved list. It is also the one exclusion on that list where the framework's own reasoning survives inspection — though not for the reason you'll read everywhere else.

The numbers

Raw garlic measures around pH 5.3 to 6.3, mildly acidic as a food.

Published PRAL tables put garlic at roughly −1.7 — alkaline-forming, in the same mild range as broccoli.

Both figures come with a caveat worth stating: PRAL is calculated per 100 grams, and nobody eats 100 grams of garlic. Two cloves is about six grams. Whatever garlic is doing to your acid load, it is doing about one-sixteenth of it. This is a food whose PRAL number is almost meaningless in practice.

Is garlic Dr. Sebi approved?

No. Garlic appears on no reproduction of the nutritional guide, and it is commonly named among the foods to avoid. Neither is onion powder's presence on the approved spice list a loophole — that's onion, not garlic.

The reason people give is wrong

Search for this and you'll be told garlic is excluded because it's a hybrid. That isn't right. Allium sativum is a species, not a cross between two others, and calling it a hybrid is the same loose usage that gets applied to broccoli and to shiitake, where it's also wrong.

The reason that actually holds

Here is what's genuinely unusual about garlic, and it's more interesting than the hybrid story.

Cultivated garlic cannot reproduce itself. It doesn't produce fertile pollen and it doesn't set seed. Every head of garlic you have ever bought was propagated vegetatively — grown from a clove split off a previous head, or from bulbils, in an unbroken line of clones. Wild relatives in Central Asia do still flower and set seed. The cultivated crop lost the ability, and restoring fertility in even a handful of lines took researchers more than twenty years of breeding work.

So if the criterion is whether a food reproduces on its own in nature, garlic is the clearest case on the entire list. It doesn't.

Compare it with what sits beside it. Onions are approved. Same genus, same kitchen role — and onions flower and set seed perfectly well. Whether or not you find the criterion persuasive, applying it to garlic and not to onions is internally consistent, which is more than can be said for excluding broccoli while approving kale.

The other side of it

None of that makes garlic bad for you. It's among the better-studied culinary plants there is, with a reasonable evidence base around cardiovascular markers, and there is no nutritional argument for avoiding it.

So the honest position is the same one this site takes throughout: if you're following Dr. Sebi's guide, garlic is out and the rule is consistent. If you're eating alkaline in the general sense, garlic is alkaline-forming and there's no measured reason to drop it.

What to use instead

This is the hardest swap on the list, because garlic isn't a flavour so much as a base. Nothing replaces it exactly. What works:

  • Onion, onion powder and a bay leaf together. The onion gives sweetness, the powder gives the savoury concentration, the bay leaf gives the background note. Used as a trio they cover most of what garlic was doing in a pot.
  • Cayenne or habanero for the heat, if that's what you were getting from raw garlic.
  • Cook the onions longer than feels necessary. Twenty minutes of slow onions builds depth garlic was previously supplying in two.

Not approved, in case you were considering them: asafoetida, chives, leek, shallot and scallion are all absent from the guide.

One thing worth being straight about

None of this changes the pH of your blood. Your lungs and kidneys hold it between 7.35 and 7.45 whatever you eat — a reading outside that range is a medical emergency, not a dietary outcome. What food shifts is urine pH, which is your kidneys processing the acid load from your meal. That is the honest extent of what PRAL tells you.

Common questions

Is garlic acidic?

Mildly, as a food, at about pH 5.3 to 6.3. Alkaline-forming after digestion, and in portions too small for that to matter much.

Why isn't garlic on the Dr. Sebi list?

It isn't named, and the list is closed. No itemised reason is published for it specifically — but unlike most exclusions, the guide's stated criterion does fit it, since cultivated garlic can't reproduce from seed.

Is garlic a hybrid?

No. It's a species that has lost the ability to reproduce sexually, which is a different thing. Being sterile isn't the same as being a cross.

Can I use garlic powder?

No. Onion powder is on the approved spice list; garlic powder isn't.

What about wild garlic or ramps?

Not named on the guide either, so excluded by the closed-list rule regardless of how they reproduce.
