Is Broccoli Alkaline? And Why Isn't It Dr. Sebi Approved?

Short answer: broccoli is alkaline-forming by measurement — and it is not on Dr. Sebi’s approved list. Both of those are true at the same time, and the reason they don’t match is the most interesting thing about this food.

What the measurements say

Cooked broccoli measures pH 6.30 to 6.52 in the FDA’s food pH table — just below neutral. Frozen and cooked runs slightly higher, canned noticeably lower at 5.20 to 6.00.

A figure of 6.70 for raw broccoli circulates widely online. We’re not using it: the FDA table doesn’t publish a raw value, and the pages quoting 6.70 don’t cite a source for it. If you see that number, it has no measurement behind it that anyone can point to.

On PRAL, broccoli comes out −1.2 — negative, meaning alkaline-forming. Published values range from −0.4 to −4.0 across different tables, and −1.2 is the figure that appears most consistently and in the tables that cite the original research directly. Every source agrees on the direction even where they differ on the size.

So is broccoli Dr. Sebi approved?

No. It appears on no version of the approved vegetable list, and it’s named explicitly among hybrid foods to avoid on Dr. Sebi’s own official site, alongside cauliflower, most orange carrots, seedless grapes and bananas, and most modern tomato varieties.

The reasoning published on Dr. Sebi advocacy materials is direct: broccoli “is hybrid, unnatural, incomplete molecular structure,” and “it’s an acid based vegetable. It has no nutritional value.”

The part nobody else will tell you

That framework statement and the measurement contradict each other head-on. The guide calls broccoli acid-based. PRAL says it’s alkaline-forming. They cannot both be right, and the measurement is the one with a method you can check.

The claim that broccoli has no nutritional value is also not supportable — it’s a well-studied vegetable with a substantial mineral and vitamin profile.

The hybrid claim, though, is historically accurate. Broccoli genuinely is a product of human selective breeding from wild Brassica oleracea — the same wild mustard that people bred into cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and kohlrabi. That part checks out.

Here’s the wrinkle: kale is also Brassica oleracea, bred by exactly the same process from exactly the same wild plant — and kale is on the approved list. So is cherry tomato, while other tomatoes aren’t. There’s no published rule that explains why the hybrid criterion catches broccoli and not kale. If you follow this way of eating and that bothers you, it should — it’s a genuine inconsistency, not something you’ve misunderstood.

What to actually do about it

Two defensible answers, depending on what you’re following:

  • Following Dr. Sebi’s guide strictly? Leave broccoli out. The guide is a closed list, and Rule 1 is that you eat what’s on it. Swapping it out costs you nothing nutritionally, because the alternatives below cover the same ground.
  • Eating alkaline more generally? Broccoli is alkaline-forming, mineral-dense and good for you. There’s no measurement-based reason to avoid it.

What to eat instead

  • Kale — closest match in texture, cooking behaviour and nutrients, and explicitly approved.
  • Dandelion greens — bitter, high in calcium and vitamin K.
  • Amaranth greens (callaloo) — the leafy counterpart to the approved grain, and familiar if you cook Caribbean food.
  • Also approved: turnip greens, watercress, purslane, okra and poke salad.

One thing worth being straight about

Whether you eat broccoli or kale, neither changes the pH of your blood — that’s held between 7.35 and 7.45 by your lungs and kidneys regardless of diet. What food shifts is urine pH, which is your kidneys doing their job on the acid load from your meal. A plate built on leafy greens is genuinely good for you. The reason is the potassium, magnesium and fibre, not your blood chemistry.

Common questions

Is broccoli acidic?

Slightly, in the bowl — about pH 6.4 cooked. In the body it’s alkaline-forming. Those aren’t contradictory; they’re two different measurements.

Why is broccoli not approved by Dr. Sebi?

Because it’s classified as a hybrid — a plant produced by human breeding rather than one that arose in nature. That’s the stated reason, and the breeding history is accurate. The accompanying claims about it being acidic and nutritionally worthless are not supported.

What other vegetables aren’t approved?

The commonly cited exclusions include cauliflower, carrots, spinach, celery, garlic, cabbage, collard greens, eggplant, radishes, sweet potato, parsley and leek. Lists vary slightly between reproductions of the guide — broccoli is absent from all of them.

Is it OK to eat broccoli every day?

Outside the Dr. Sebi framework, yes, for most people. If you take thyroid medication or have a thyroid condition, large daily amounts of raw cruciferous vegetables are worth raising with your doctor.
